Heirloom
Ethiopia Halo Beriti 250 g
This sweet and floral-washed Ethiopian coffee delights with its delicacy. It’s an excellent choice for those who appreciate refined acidity in their coffee. The combination of lavender, Earl Grey, and molasses notes creates a tea-like brew, but the flavour remains round and full-bodied.
In the Geed region of Yirgacheffe, approximately 750 smallholder farmers deliver their coffee cherries to the Halo Beriti Washing Station. These farmers’ plots are usually very small, often less than half a hectare, and they grow coffee alongside other crops.
For micro-lots like this, Abyote Ageze and Mebrahtu Aynalem select the farmers they will work with before the harvest season begins and train them for three days on the best picking practices. Consistency in this process is crucial. Since most farms are too small to produce a whole lot, farmers combine their cherries based on location to ensure consistency in soil type, altitude, rainfall patterns, heirloom varieties, and other factors.
Heirloom is a broad term that describes a mix of unspecified coffee varieties collected from nearby areas. With an estimated six to ten thousand different coffee varieties in Ethiopia, the sheer number makes it difficult to conduct genetic testing, leaving buyers unable to differentiate them. With the natural cross-pollination occurring in the wild, the term “heirloom” serves as a catch-all descriptor.
Boledu was among the best-ranked producers in Ethiopia’s first Cup of Excellence in 2020. Their coffee ranked 21st.
